October 31, 2024 — United Marine Egypt Shipping (UME) has officially become the launch customer for the Monarch seaglider, an innovative high-speed passenger craft developed by U.S. maritime transport company Regent. The announcement reveals that UME will receive an undisclosed number of these electric vehicles, designed to transport 50 to 100 passengers at speeds of up to 225 km/h over water.
The Monarch seaglider, capable of covering distances up to 650 km, utilizes a unique hydrofoil design that allows it to fly just above the water’s surface. This innovative approach reduces drag and increases lift by creating a cushion of high-pressure air between the vessel’s wings and the water.
This partnership is expected to enhance UME’s shipping network by connecting key destinations across the Red Sea. UME chairman Mohamed Badawy emphasized the collaboration’s potential to advance sustainability and efficiency in the shipping industry.
In addition to the Monarch seaglider, UME has also ordered an undisclosed number of Regent’s smaller 12-passenger Viceroy crafts. Both models are currently under development and are projected to enter production by the end of the decade, with oversight from Lloyd’s Register for the certification process.
Regent, which has raised $90 million from notable investors including Japan Airlines and Lockheed Martin, is backed by the Neom Investment Fund and Abu Dhabi’s Strategic Development Funds. The company recently signed a multi-year agreement with Neom to establish regional seaglider operations, aimed at improving coastal transportation across a 468 km coastline.
The venture aligns with Regent’s broader plans, including a manufacturing facility in Abu Dhabi’s Masdar City and potential seaglider services to various islands. Additionally, Middle East courier Aramex is collaborating with Regent to develop seaglider logistics solutions.
As this project develops, it signals a significant step towards innovative, sustainable transportation in the region.
