An Israeli tank accidentally fired shells that struck the Egyptian border, resulting in injuries to at least seven people, including several Egyptian border guards, as confirmed by the militaries of both countries. The incident occurred late on Sunday, with the Israeli military acknowledging the accidental hit on the Egyptian position near the border with the Gaza Strip. Both nations are investigating the incident.
The wounded individuals were promptly taken to the hospital. Marwan Bishara, Al Jazeera’s senior political analyst, suggested that this incident may further complicate Israel’s relationship with Egypt, potentially prompting Egyptian calls for Israel to ease its bombing of Gaza.
Witnesses reported that the Israeli strike would not disrupt the passage of aid to Gaza. This accidental blast came shortly after a second convoy of aid trucks entered the Egyptian side of the Rafah border crossing to head towards Gaza. However, aid officials warn that supplies of food, water, and fuel in Gaza remain critically low. The UN has stated that a minimum of 100 trucks a day is needed in Gaza to address the ongoing crisis.
