In a heart-wrenching incident that unfolded on an Egyptian highway, at least 35 individuals lost their lives, and over 50 others sustained injuries in a devastating collision. The accident, described as “horrific,” involved a bus and multiple cars and occurred on the Cairo-Alexandria desert road near Wadi al-Natrun.
Al-Ahram news website reported the grim details, noting that at least 18 of the victims tragically succumbed to burns, while the total injured count exceeded 53.
Images shared on social media depicted the aftermath of the accident, with an overturned lorry obstructing the fast lane, surrounded by charred road pavement. Nearby, a bus and a minibus, both extensively damaged by fire, were visible, along with several cars, some still ablaze.
Spectators and onlookers gathered along the road, observing the crash site as queues of vehicles lined up, and thick black smoke billowed into the sky.
Egypt, where road conditions are often subpar, and traffic regulations are frequently disregarded, experiences a high rate of traffic accidents. Official statistics reported 7,000 fatalities in road accidents in 2021, making it the most populous country in the Arab world.
