Somalia, Eritrea, and Egypt Strengthen Security Ties

The presidents of Somalia, Eritrea, and Egypt have committed to enhancing cooperation on regional security during a summit in Asmara, Eritrea. The meeting, called by Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki, included Egypt’s Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Somalia’s Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.

In a statement from the Eritrean information ministry, the leaders emphasized the need to improve regional stability, stressing “unequivocal respect for the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity” of the countries involved. They also condemned external interference in regional affairs and committed to coordinating efforts for sustainable development.

The security situation in Somalia, particularly the ongoing conflict with the al-Shabab armed group, was a key topic. The leaders agreed to deepen cooperation to combat terrorism, protect land and sea borders, and maintain territorial integrity.

This security agreement may raise concerns in Ethiopia, which has deployed thousands of troops in Somalia to combat al-Qaeda-linked groups. Ethiopia’s relationship with Mogadishu has been strained, particularly due to disputes over a proposed port in Somaliland, a region seeking independence but not internationally recognized.

The summit marks a significant step toward strengthened regional collaboration amidst ongoing challenges in the Horn of Africa.
