Riyadh to Launch Driverless Monorail Connecting Financial District

By Neil Halligan, November 1, 2024

In a major development for urban transport, Riyadh’s King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD) has signed an agreement to establish a cutting-edge driverless monorail system. This ambitious project aims to enhance connectivity within the bustling financial hub of Saudi Arabia’s capital.

Spanning 3.6 kilometers, the monorail will feature six trains operating on an elevated circular track, linking key towers within the district. With six strategically placed stations, the monorail will seamlessly connect office buildings, retail spaces, and leisure facilities, making it an integral part of KAFD’s vision for a “ten-minute city” where all amenities are within easy reach.

Designed to accommodate up to 3,500 passengers per hour during peak times, the monorail will also connect with the Riyadh Metro, enhancing the overall efficiency of the city’s transportation network. The agreement for the project involves partnerships with CRRC (Hong Kong) and CRRC Nanjing Puzhen, along with Hassan Allam Construction Saudi. While an official operational date has not been announced, local reports indicate that the line is expected to be ready by 2026.

The $10 billion KAFD project covers 1.6 million square meters and hosts 95 buildings across diverse sectors, including offices, residences, retail, hospitality, and entertainment, all designed for easy pedestrian access.

Stephen Thomas, COO of KAFD Development & Management Company, emphasized that this monorail will significantly contribute to the long-term sustainability of Riyadh, aligning with the kingdom’s broader goals of reducing traffic congestion and lowering carbon emissions.

As part of its ongoing commitment to modernize its transportation infrastructure, Saudi Arabia is making strides in rail development. The country’s railway network saw a 17% increase in passenger usage in the first half of 2024, reflecting a growing trend toward rail travel.

While the Riyadh Metro, initially set to open this year, has been delayed until 2025, the city’s transport landscape is rapidly evolving, with plans for additional metro systems in Mecca and Dammam on the horizon. The driverless monorail represents a forward-thinking approach to urban mobility, positioning Riyadh as a leader in innovative public transport solutions.
