Doha, Qatar — October 28, 2024 — The United States and Qatar have confirmed that negotiations aimed at establishing a ceasefire in Gaza will resume in the coming days. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken made the announcement following discussions with Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani.
Blinken noted that the mediators are exploring new avenues after previous efforts to finalize a U.S.-led ceasefire plan fell short. He emphasized the urgency of ending the ongoing conflict, which has continued since Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, and the recent Israeli military response that led to the death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar.
“We talked about options to capitalize on this moment and next steps to move the process forward,” Blinken stated, indicating a focus on ensuring Israel’s withdrawal while preventing Hamas from rearming and allowing the Palestinian population to rebuild.
The Qatari Prime Minister confirmed that delegations from Israel and the U.S. would meet in Doha to discuss potential ceasefire arrangements. Israeli Mossad chief David Barnea is expected to arrive in Doha to engage in talks with CIA director William Burns and the Qatari Prime Minister.
Additionally, an Egyptian security delegation has met with Hamas leaders in Cairo as part of ongoing efforts to revive ceasefire negotiations, highlighting the multi-faceted diplomatic engagements taking place in the region.
