Pemex Reportedly Agrees to Transfer Lakach Gas Project Control to Grupo Carso

According to a report by El Heraldo columnist Dario Celis, Mexican state oil firm Pemex has allegedly reached an agreement to transfer control of its Lakach natural gas project in the Gulf of Mexico to Grupo Carso, a company owned by Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim. Reuters cited the report, which did not disclose the sources of the information.

Neither Pemex nor representatives of Carlos Slim have immediately responded to requests for comment regarding this alleged agreement. However, last month, Reuters had reported ongoing discussions between Pemex and Slim’s team aimed at revitalizing the development of the Lakach field. This offshore project represents Mexico’s inaugural venture into deepwater natural gas extraction but has faced challenges in the past.

For Pemex, finding a new partner is deemed crucial for advancing the Lakach field’s development, particularly following the withdrawal of US liquefied natural gas company New Fortress Energy from the project last year. The Lakach field holds significant promise for exploring Mexico’s deepwater natural gas potential.
