Renowned English actress Olivia Colman has joined a group of 1,300 artists in signing an open letter that accuses cultural institutions in the West of censoring Palestinian voices, according to press reports on Tuesday.
The letter accuses Western art and cultural institutions of “repressing, silencing, and stigmatizing Palestinian voices and perspectives.” It highlights instances of targeting and threatening the livelihoods of artists expressing solidarity with Palestinians, along with canceling performances, screenings, talks, exhibitions, and book launches.
Despite ongoing threats, the artists, including actors, singers, and writers, affirm their commitment to following their conscience and speaking up. The letter cites specific cases, such as the firing of Melissa Barrera from the Scream movie franchise for alleged “hate speech” and the cancellation of Ai Weiwei’s London exhibition due to his supportive comments on Palestinians.
