Minister of Transport Kamel al-Wazir announced in a press statement on Wednesday that a new batch of 16 Transmashholding railcars had arrived at the Port of Alexandria. This latest shipment brings the total number of delivered railcars to 946 out of the 1,300 units contracted.
The shipment includes 16 air-conditioned third-class railcars as well as four maintenance machines, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing modernization of Egypt’s rail infrastructure.
The €1 billion contract with Transmashholding includes the supply of 1,300 railcars: 500 dynamic-ventilation third-class units, 500 air-conditioned third-class units, 180 air-conditioned second-class units, 90 air-conditioned first-class units, and 30 air-conditioned cabooses. This procurement was essential, as only 2,200 out of 3,200 passenger railcars in Egypt were functional prior to this deal.
Regarding train engines, 130 out of the planned 260 new units have entered service. Additionally, 61 out of 400 designated engines have been rehabilitated, which accounts for half of the total number of engines in Egypt’s possession. Furthermore, five out of six Talgo trains have commenced operation.
Minister al-Wazir emphasized the importance of these developments in enhancing the capacity and efficiency of Egypt’s rail system. The ongoing delivery and rehabilitation efforts are part of a broader strategy to modernize the country’s transportation infrastructure, ensuring improved service quality and passenger comfort.
