Microsoft Unveils Plan to Establish First Regional Data Centre in Thailand

Microsoft has disclosed its intention to establish its inaugural regional data centre in Thailand, as reported by Reuters on Wednesday. The move aims to significantly enhance the accessibility of cloud services within the country.

This announcement follows closely after CEO Satya Nadella’s recent revelation of a $1.7 billion investment in artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud infrastructure in Indonesia, according to the report.

The expansion of the data centre region by Microsoft is anticipated to augment the availability of its hyperscale cloud services. This entails the full operationalization of Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform in Thailand, providing access to cutting-edge AI infrastructure, as emphasized by Nadella during an event in Bangkok. Microsoft has underscored that the new data centre will offer a multitude of advantages, including enterprise-grade reliability, enhanced performance, and adherence to data residency and privacy standards.

This strategic move aligns with Thailand’s aspiration to position itself as a digital economy hub, as highlighted by Prime Minister Srettha Thaivisin.

Moreover, Microsoft has pledged to train 2.5 million individuals across Southeast Asia in AI skills by the year 2025.
