A mural honoring Palestinian photojournalist Motaz Azaiza has been unveiled in Manchester, England, as a tribute to the journalists reporting from Gaza. The artwork, created by Akse P19, is dedicated to all journalists covering events in Gaza.
Commissioner of the mural, Ali Yousef, reported that the artwork has received “positive” reactions from the community. Akse P19, known for various murals across the city, including depictions of footballer Marcus Rashford and suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst, expressed the significance of this latest creation.
In a post on Instagram, the artist highlighted the mural’s context, stating that this period marks “the deadliest for journalists covering conflicts since [Committee to Protect Journalists] records began in 1992.” The mural aims to acknowledge the challenges faced by journalists, especially in light of the recent Israel-Gaza war, where at least 80 media workers were killed covering the attacks since October.
Motaz Azaiza, the subject of the mural, boasts over 17 million Instagram followers and was recently honored as “man of the year” by GQ Middle East for his impactful coverage of the Israel-Gaza war.
