Jordan Welcomes New FSRU to Strengthen Regional Energy Supply Chain

In a major boost for regional energy infrastructure, a new Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) has arrived at the Port of Aqaba. The vessel, designed to receive, store, and regasify liquefied natural gas (LNG), is expected to enhance natural gas supplies to both Jordan and Egypt, while providing flexibility for neighboring countries across the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East.

The newly arrived FSRU, Liberty Horizon, brings critical additional capacity amid rising energy demand and shifting geopolitical dynamics. It is part of a coordinated strategy between Jordan, Egypt, and international energy partners to stabilize supply and reinforce energy security across the region.

“This FSRU strengthens Jordan’s position as an energy transit hub,” said Jordan’s Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Eng. Saleh Kharabsheh. “It ensures a more reliable gas flow not only for our domestic needs but also for Egypt and potentially other partner countries.”

Egypt, which has developed into a major gas exporter through its LNG terminals, is expected to benefit from the regasification capacity to balance seasonal demand and uphold export contracts. The arrangement may also serve as a buffer for nations experiencing sporadic energy shortages.

The Liberty Horizon is equipped to store over 170,000 cubic meters of LNG and regasify up to 750 million cubic feet per day enough to significantly improve supply flexibility across interconnected regional networks.

“This move reflects growing regional coordination in energy logistics and supply,” said Dr. Hassan Mahfouz, a Cairo-based energy economist. “Floating infrastructure like this allows for rapid response to market needs, particularly in times of stress.”

Officials from the Jordanian National Electric Power Company (NEPCO) and Egypt’s EGAS emphasized that the FSRU’s deployment aligns with long-term goals to modernize and integrate energy systems across the region.

With power demand surging during the summer months and global LNG markets facing tight conditions, the FSRU’s arrival comes at a critical moment one that highlights the strategic value of agile infrastructure in securing energy futures.
