According to a Reuters report citing The Verge, Google CEO Sundar Pichai has informed employees that additional layoffs are likely at the Alphabet-owned company this year. In an internal memo, Pichai emphasized that this year’s layoffs are aimed at eliminating layers to streamline operations and enhance productivity in specific areas.
The memo further indicated that these role eliminations would not be on the scale of last year’s reductions and would not affect every team. Pichai stated, “We have ambitious goals and will be investing in our big priorities this year.”
While Google did not provide additional details about the memo, it acknowledged that the email had been sent to all employees. Last week, Google announced layoffs in its augmented reality team, hardware teams working on Pixel, Nest, and Fitbit, and advertising sales teams.
Alphabet had previously revealed plans to cut 12,000 jobs, which accounts for 6% of its global workforce, in January 2023. As of September 2023, Google’s workforce worldwide had reached 182,381 employees.
