European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is scheduled to visit Egypt and Jordan, according to her spokesperson on Wednesday. The visit comes in the wake of the ongoing Israeli aggression in Gaza, which has persisted for over five weeks.
Eric Mamer, the spokesperson, stated that von der Leyen will meet Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on Saturday and will subsequently head to Sinai to witness the arrival of an EU humanitarian convoy.
Following her engagements in Egypt, von der Leyen is slated to meet with King Abdullah II in Jordan, as communicated by Mamer. Notably, the EU chief had swiftly visited Israel on October 13, just a week after Hamas initiated its attack on October 7.
In the midst of the ongoing conflict in Gaza, health officials report that more than 11,500 civilians have lost their lives due to the continuous bombardment and ground offensive.
Despite being a staunch supporter of Israel, von der Leyen emphasized the importance of Israel making efforts to “avoid civilian casualties” in its operations in Gaza.
In a parallel development, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell is set to embark on a visit to the Middle East starting Thursday. His itinerary includes humanitarian and political talks in Israel, Ramallah in the occupied West Bank, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Jordan.
