ENI’s exploration efforts in block 6 of Cyprus’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ) have led to the discovery of a significant natural gas reservoir, as indicated by gas flaring during drilling operations at the Cronos-2 target, according to a press release acquired by Amwal Al Ghad on Friday.
The drilling at the Cronos-2 target, managed by ENI, the block’s operator, utilized the floating rig Transocean Barents, as reported by CNA. This discovery marks the fourth in block 6, following the successful identification of gas deposits in Zeus, Cronos-1, and Calypso. Zeus is estimated to contain 2-3 trillion cubic feet of gas, while Cronos-1 holds approximately 2.5 trillion cubic feet.
ENI described Calypso as a promising discovery that affirms the extension of Zhor-like structures within Cyprus’s EEZ.
Situated about 160 kilometers southwest of Cyprus, Block 6 is operated by ENI, which possesses a 50% stake, with Total Energies holding the remaining 50% stake. The latest revelation at Cronos-2 further underscores the potential for substantial natural gas resources in Cyprus’ offshore reserves.
