Egypt’s Public Sector Employment Sees Decline in 2023, CAPMAS Reports

According to data released by the Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS), the number of Egyptian employees in the public sector witnessed a 1.1 percent decrease in 2023, with the workforce shrinking to 663,300 workers from 671,000 in the previous year.

The report highlighted a 1.3 percent decline in the number of male workers, dropping from 588,000 in 2022 to 580,200 in 2023. Similarly, the number of female workers experienced a slight reduction from 83,300 in 2022 to 83,200 in 2023, marking a 0.2 percent decrease.

Sector-wise analysis revealed that the housing and construction sector emerged as the largest employer, with 214,900 workers, constituting 32.4 percent of the total workforce. This was followed by the industry, petroleum, and mineral wealth sector at 20.7 percent, and the electricity sector at 17.6 percent.

Among governorates, Cairo boasted the highest number of public sector workers, totaling 233,627, accounting for 35.2 percent of the total workforce. Alexandria trailed behind with 69,297 workers, as per the report’s findings.
