Egypt’s President El-Sisi Congratulates New European Council President Antonio Costa

Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi extended his congratulations to Antonio Costa, the newly appointed President of the European Council, on Sunday. In a social media post, President El-Sisi expressed his desire to strengthen the long-standing relationship between Egypt and the European Union (EU). He also emphasized his commitment to enhancing cooperation with the EU, focusing on regional security, stability, and addressing ongoing global conflicts.

Costa, a former prime minister of Portugal, officially took office on December 1, succeeding Belgium’s Charles Michel. On his first day as President of the European Council, Costa, alongside Estonia’s Prime Minister Kaja Kallas, the EU’s new Foreign Policy Chief, visited Kyiv to reaffirm the EU’s support for Ukraine amidst the ongoing war with Russia.

During the handover ceremony on Friday, Costa highlighted the urgent need for peace in Ukraine, nearly three years into the conflict. He stressed that any peace must be just, lasting, and grounded in international law, warning that peace should not come at the cost of rewarding aggressors. “Peace cannot mean the peace of a graveyard,” Costa declared, adding that “peace must not reward the aggressor.”
