Egyptian Minister of International Cooperation, Dr. Rania Al Mashat, has underscored the immense importance of the 28th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28), scheduled to be hosted by the UAE from November 30 to December 12, 2023, at Expo City Dubai. This international event is poised to serve as a critical platform for addressing the pressing issue of climate change and its far-reaching impacts on nations and communities.
In conversation with the Emirates News Agency (WAM), Al Mashat expressed her views, emphasizing that the UAE’s hosting of COP28 following Egypt’s successful hosting of COP27 signifies the shared commitment of countries in the region to climate action. The event serves as a rallying point for global efforts to combat climate change, particularly within the Arab region and the broader Middle East and North Africa region.
Al Mashat highlighted reports indicating that the Middle East and North Africa region is among the most vulnerable to climate change risks. With 60% of the region’s population residing in areas grappling with severe water stress and a potential 20 million people facing displacement due to climate change, the region’s urgent need for climate action cannot be overstated.
During COP28, significant presentations will be made showcasing the outcomes and collaborative initiatives developed over the past year within the framework of the National Platform for Green Projects (Novi) and the Sharm El Sheikh Guidebook for Just Financing.
Al Mashat also noted her participation in a series of preparatory events hosted by the UAE in the lead-up to COP28. These events have laid the groundwork for a comprehensive roadmap to advance climate action across the region.
Recalling the achievements of COP27, Al Mashat highlighted crucial outcomes such as the COP27 Loss and Damage Fund. Looking ahead, she emphasized that COP28 is poised to further international endeavors aimed at supporting developing nations and emerging economies in their transition towards green and sustainable pathways.
