Egypt Urges International Support for Sudan Crisis Amid Rising Refugee Numbers

Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Badr Abdelatty, emphasized the “unfairness” of neighboring countries shouldering the majority of the humanitarian crisis in Sudan, as over three million displaced people have fled, primarily to Egypt. Speaking at the “Quartet on Sudan” meeting on the sidelines of the G7 Ministerial Meetings in Italy, Abdelatty called for greater international aid and support for Sudan, which faces a 75% shortfall in its humanitarian needs.

He highlighted the staggering number of displaced Sudanese—11 million internally—while stressing the need for a ceasefire and increased humanitarian assistance. By October 2024, Egypt had registered 818,376 refugees, with Sudanese nationals accounting for 66% of the total.Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Badr Abdelatty, emphasized the “unfairness” of neighboring countries shouldering the majority of the humanitarian crisis in Sudan, as over three million displaced people have fled, primarily to Egypt.
