Egypt Signs MoU with UAE’s Global South Utilities and China’s JA Solar for Solar Energy Factories

Egypt has officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with UAE-based Global South Utilities and China’s JA Solar to establish two solar energy manufacturing plants. The signing ceremony, which took place in the presence of Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, marks a significant step in Egypt’s renewable energy ambitions.

The agreement outlines the construction of two production facilities, each with a capacity of 2 gigawatts. One factory will focus on manufacturing solar cells, while the other will produce solar panels. These projects are crucial to meeting Egypt’s growing energy demands and advancing its clean energy goals.

Global South Utilities will assist JA Solar in conducting feasibility studies and securing government incentives for the initiative. The investment for the two factories is projected at $138 million for the solar cell production facility and $75 million for the solar panel plant, which will primarily serve the local market.

Prime Minister Madbouly highlighted the importance of industrial development in driving sustainable growth, noting that the solar factories align with Egypt’s Sustainable Energy Strategy 2035. The strategy aims to boost energy efficiency, increase the share of renewable energy, and ensure energy security.

The factories will use locally sourced materials such as glass and aluminum, supporting Egypt’s efforts to localize industrial expertise and contribute to economic growth and job creation.
