Cairo, August 20, 2025 — Egypt has urged Israel to swiftly green-light a ceasefire proposal in Gaza, already accepted by Hamas, warning that the deal offers a vital opportunity to stabilize the region and revive peace talks based on a two-state solution.
In a statement issued Wednesday, Egypt’s Foreign Ministry emphasized the need for immediate action from Israel to implement the U.S.-mediated truce proposal, which outlines a 60-day cessation of hostilities, the exchange of hostages and prisoners, and the opening of humanitarian aid corridors. Egyptian officials are closely coordinating with international partners including the EU and Turkey to bolster pressure on Israel to respond positively.
Though Hamas and other Palestinian factions formally accepted the latest proposal on Monday, Israel has yet to provide an official reply. Meanwhile, the enduring humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza intensifies as heavy bombardment and mass displacement continue, claiming thousands of lives.
Despite mounting international concern and growing domestic protests in Israel demanding the release of remaining hostages, Israeli leadership remains divided. Hardline ministers oppose a truce, while others warn that continued military action may further destabilize the situation and jeopardize surviving captives.
Egyptian and Qatari mediators stress that the proposal closely aligns with an earlier U.S. plan that Israel once accepted but Hamas initially rejected. They believe this renewed bid could catalyze a lasting peace if Israel acts swiftly.
