Egypt’s mission to the United Nations presented a draft resolution to the UN General Assembly on Monday, urging an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza. Osama Abdel Khalek, Egypt’s UN representative, emphasized the urgent need to halt the ongoing bloodshed.
The General Assembly resolution put forth by Egypt echoes the language of a Security Council resolution that the United States vetoed on Friday.
Both Egypt and Mauritania, in the resolution, advocate for the activation of Article 377, known as “Uniting for Peace.” This article, established in 1950, empowers the 193-member UN General Assembly to take action when the Security Council (UNSC) fails in maintaining global peace and security.
The proposed resolution is scheduled for a vote on Tuesday.
