Egypt has joined Turkey in calling for the United Nations to impose an arms embargo on Israel. This appeal, which is backed by dozens of countries, comes amid Israel’s ongoing conflicts with Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon.
In a statement issued by Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the country emphasized its support for international efforts to halt arms deliveries to Israel, citing concerns over the use of these weapons. The call for an embargo is aimed at pressuring Israel to cease what Egypt described as “continuous violations of international law and international humanitarian law” and to protect Palestinian civilians from ongoing Israeli military actions.
This move follows a letter submitted by Turkey, signed by 52 countries, urging the UN to stop arms shipments to Israel. In response, Israel’s ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, accused Turkey of acting with “malice.”
Egypt, which was the first Arab country to sign a peace treaty with Israel in 1979, has historically maintained a diplomatic relationship with Israel. However, this latest call signals a shift in its stance, highlighting Egypt’s ongoing concerns over the humanitarian situation in Palestine.
