Swansea University’s Egypt Centre has received a significant funding boost of £300,000 from the Welsh Government’s Cultural Transformation Capital Grant Programme to revamp its House of Death gallery. The upgrade will bring immersive experiences to visitors, including ancient Egyptian sounds and smells, and improve accessibility for all, with new interactive spaces, automatic doors, improved display cases, and updated research-based interpretations.
The Egypt Centre, Wales’ only dedicated museum of ancient Egyptian antiquities, attracts around 20,000 visitors annually. Curator Dr. Ken Griffin expressed excitement about the redevelopment, marking the first major update to the gallery in over 25 years. The work, expected to begin in late 2025, is part of broader efforts to secure further funding to enhance the museum’s facilities for future generations.
Culture Minister Jack Sargeant celebrated the investment, noting the Centre’s importance as a resource for education and community engagement.
