Egypt Calls for Syrian-Led Political Process After Assad’s Overthrow

Egypt is urging a comprehensive, Syrian-led political process following the ousting of President Bashar Al-Assad by opposition forces, the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced Tuesday.

The ministry emphasized the importance of a unified Syrian effort, free from external interference, to restore stability and rebuild the nation in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2254. The proposed process aims to preserve Syria’s unity, involve all societal segments, and enable Syrians to shape their future, rebuild institutions, and restore the country’s regional and international standing.

Egypt reaffirmed its commitment to supporting this initiative and ensuring its success while preventing actions that threaten Syria’s sovereignty or territorial integrity. The ministry also stressed the need to create conditions for the safe return of refugees and displaced persons.

In a related development, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty held talks with his Turkish counterpart, Hakan Fidan, to discuss Syria. Both ministers underscored the importance of regional and international collaboration to uphold Syria’s sovereignty and promote a Syrian-led political resolution.

Abdelatty reiterated Egypt’s stance on ensuring the process remains genuinely Syrian-led and inclusive, reflecting Syria’s societal diversity. He highlighted that such an approach is essential for achieving lasting stability and enabling Syria to reclaim its regional and international role.
