Egypt and Saudi Arabia Call for De-Escalation in Gaza and Lebanon

CAIRO, 16 October 2024 — Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud have urged for immediate de-escalation in the ongoing conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon, including the implementation of a ceasefire. Their call for peace was made during an official meeting in Cairo on 15 October, where they addressed bilateral relations and regional challenges.

The leaders emphasized the dire humanitarian conditions in Gaza and Lebanon and condemned escalating tensions that threaten regional stability. They reinforced the importance of respecting Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity while highlighting the necessity for a sustainable resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state, in line with international laws.

During the discussions, Sisi and bin Salman addressed a range of regional issues, including security in the Red Sea, and the situations in Sudan, Libya, and Syria. They expressed concern over the implications of attempts to undermine the Palestinian cause, which they warned could perpetuate conflict in the region.

In addition to their discussions on conflict resolution, the two leaders underscored the strategic partnership between Egypt and Saudi Arabia. They witnessed the signing of agreements aimed at enhancing cooperation, including the establishment of a supreme Egyptian-Saudi coordination council and a mutual investment protection agreement.

Bin Salman conveyed greetings from King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, reaffirming Saudi Arabia’s commitment to strengthening ties with Egypt across various sectors, including political, economic, and developmental initiatives.

The crown prince’s visit marks his first official trip to Egypt since 2022, coming at a time of significant regional tensions and economic opportunities. Last month, he announced a $5 billion investment plan in Egypt, signaling a commitment to enhancing economic collaboration between the two nations.
