Cairo – October 15, 2024 – Egyptian Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Dr. Mahmoud Esmat met with Greek Minister of Environment and Energy Theodoros Skylakakis in the New Administrative Capital to discuss enhancing cooperation in electricity and renewable energy sectors.
The meeting focused on the interconnection line project between Egypt and Greece, a key component of the broader European-African energy interconnection initiative. This project aims to bolster energy security and facilitate the exchange of clean electricity between the two regions.
Both ministers explored ways to accelerate the project’s implementation, addressing technical, financial, and regulatory aspects. They also discussed collaboration in technological innovation, energy storage, and the integration of renewable energy into electricity networks.
Minister Skylakakis emphasized Greece’s appreciation for Egypt’s strides in renewable energy, calling the interconnection project a vital strategic endeavor for Europe that aligns with the EU’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
At the conclusion of the meeting, both ministers reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the project swiftly, aiming to establish it as a model for regional energy cooperation.
