Egypt has launched a comprehensive national database aimed at accelerating the localization of its automotive industry, a move officials say will strengthen domestic production capacity and reduce reliance on imports.
The initiative, announced by the Ministry of Trade and Industry, is designed to connect manufacturers, parts suppliers, and investors through a unified digital platform. The database will serve as a central hub for industry data, including supplier capabilities, available technologies, production volumes, and workforce skills.
According to Trade and Industry Minister Ahmed Samir, the platform will play a “pivotal role in mapping out Egypt’s automotive ecosystem” and will be instrumental in identifying gaps in local production. This, he explained, will guide investment decisions and support the government’s broader strategy to position Egypt as a regional automotive hub.
The project aligns with the country’s 2022 Automotive Industry Development Strategy, which targets increased local content in vehicles, expansion of electric vehicle manufacturing, and creation of jobs in high-value industrial segments.
Industry stakeholders have welcomed the move, noting that better data sharing could improve supply chain efficiency, encourage partnerships, and attract foreign direct investment. Analysts also highlight that the database will help policymakers craft targeted incentives for manufacturers willing to set up or expand operations in Egypt.
With global demand for vehicles shifting toward more sustainable and locally sourced production, Egypt’s new database could provide the strategic advantage needed to secure its place in the evolving automotive market.
