Egyptian authorities have arrested a popular TikTok content creator known for combining comedy with powerlifting videos, in the latest development of an ongoing government crackdown on social media influencers.
The creator, whose real name has not been officially disclosed but is widely known online by the moniker “Big Mo”, was reportedly taken into custody on Sunday night in Cairo. He faces charges related to the alleged “misuse of social media platforms” and “posting content deemed inconsistent with public morals,” according to a statement released by the Public Prosecution Office.
Big Mo has amassed hundreds of thousands of followers on TikTok and Instagram, gaining popularity for his humorous gym routines, motivational skits, and parody videos that often poked fun at everyday Egyptian life. His arrest has sparked a wave of reactions online, with fans and fellow content creators calling for transparency and due process.
“He’s one of the few creators who made people laugh without hurting anyone or being vulgar,” said a fellow influencer who requested anonymity. “His content was about strength and positivity.”
The Egyptian government has increasingly targeted digital influencers over the past two years under laws aimed at regulating online content. Dozens of TikTok personalities many of them women have faced charges ranging from incitement to debauchery to undermining family values.
While officials argue the measures are intended to protect societal norms and prevent exploitation, human rights organizations say the laws are overly broad and used selectively to stifle free expression.
“Authorities continue to use vague legal provisions to control digital spaces and silence voices that challenge or simply stand out,” said Amr Magdy, a researcher with Human Rights Watch. “The pattern is deeply concerning.”
As of Monday evening, no trial date had been announced, and the creator remains in custody pending further investigation. Legal experts say the case could become a flashpoint in Egypt’s ongoing debate over online freedoms and cultural expression.
