Egypt has officially launched the trial phase of the Cheng He Institute for Smart Railway Signal Control, marking a significant leap forward in the country’s push for advanced rail infrastructure powered by smart technology.
The new institute, a collaboration between Egypt and China, is located within the Badr City area and aims to train a new generation of Egyptian engineers and technicians in cutting-edge rail signal systems. Developed with support from Chinese expertise and technology, the Cheng He Institute is expected to serve as a regional hub for smart transportation solutions.
Egypt’s Minister of Transport, Kamel El-Wazir, attended the inauguration ceremony and emphasized that the project is part of Egypt’s broader strategy to modernize its transportation sector. “This institute is not just a training facility—it’s a bridge to the future of smart mobility in Egypt and the Middle East,” he said.
The institute will focus on intelligent railway signaling, automation, and digital monitoring technologies, aligning with global trends in sustainable and efficient rail operations. Experts from both countries will oversee the trial stage, with full operations expected by early 2026.
The initiative is a cornerstone of the Belt and Road cooperation between Cairo and Beijing, reinforcing China’s growing footprint in African infrastructure development.
